Video Splitter / Problems with .mts files
« on: December 04, 2018, 01:41:16 AM »
Greetings. Big fan of Video Splitter here, finally addressing an issue with DVB-T recordings / .mts files. As you know this is a common filetype when people record TV program, and I can imagine Video Splitter being a popular choice in order to trim the recordings by removing ads etc.
Most of the time, Video Splitter deals with them fine, sometimes there's warbled video or audio and minor artifacts. I'm not sure if there's a way to prevent those. But the main problem is that the program seems to do *something* during trimming and the resulting .mts file has problems upon trying to remux it into a mkv with programs like mkvtoolnix. I do this since .mkv is a more common and "user friendly" filetype between video player apps and media players in Smart TVs etc. without the problems that come with .mts sometimes.

So, it seems that each time there's a cut point, audio/video gets out of sync which is a big problem as you can imagine.
In each and every one of them, mkvmerge reports the following error:
"ts' track 1: This audio track contains 170 bytes of invalid data which were skipped before timestamp 00:06:53.024000000. The audio/video synchronization may have been lost".

"Obey sample times" ticked or unticked doesn't seem to make a difference and I have no idea how I could avoid it.
I know remuxing .mts to .mkv BEFORE trimming with Video Splitter, results in a more smooth editing process without problems but when you deal with a 10 gb recording for example, trimming the .mts saves you hard drive space and time since you don't have to remux to mkv beforehand. You can choose to remux the trimmed recording later but this is usually a much smaller file.
For example, there are times, I want to keep 5 mins of program from a 2h recording. When you have to work with multiple recordings, almost daily, as you can imagine something like that makes a big difference in hard drive space and time.
Is there anything I can do while trimming the .mts file so I don't get the audio/video sync problem while remuxing in .mkv? Maybe you could add mkv as an output option at some point, so no further remuxing in a separate program needed?
I hope there's a solution, I don't seem to get the same problem with programs like Smart Cutter but I like Video Trimmer much better and I'd prefer to work with that.  :)

Also, I have compiled a list with bugs/things to improve as well as new feature ideas, should I contact someone specifically?
Thanks.

Hello Olga

After extensive testing I am sorry to report that the problem remains. As with the previous beta, I get the exact same hanging at 0% resulting in the program eventually crashing and a resulting file which cannot be reproduced or has skipping/audio problems. Basically the EXACT SAME thing that happened with SolveigMM_Video_Splitter_3_7_1306_21_Beta, only SolveigMM_Video_Splitter_3_6_1306_21 seems to process it fine. It is obvious that for some reason the latest beta versions of the splitter cannot trim/process some type of mkv files of this kind correctly. As I've said before I get the same thing when I try to process the OTHER mkv file with the DTS sound too so that doesn't look like an isolated case for that particular mkv file.

By the way, I've tried to trim some .mts tv recordings and I've noticed that the edits weren't accurate i.e the output video wasn't trimmed at the frames I had set it to, keeping stuff I had set it to cut. Is this known/expected behaviour? Could it be corrected? I just thought I'd let you know/ask you since you seem to currently working on improvements. :)

Thank you.

Hello there

Do we have any news?

Hello Olga

I see what you mean about the DTS audio file. I've emailed you some thoughts on this along with a sample of the other mkv video, the one which the latest beta seems to have problems with.
Thanks.

Greetings Olga

Thanks for the reply and for looking at the issue. After trying the latest beta you've suggested I can confirm the freezing problem I've reported is resolved. It really occurred in most of the mkv files I've tried to process so I guess many users will be benefited from the fix. Well done.

Is this beta version stable enough to use / improved over 3.6.1306.21?
I am asking because I ran into problems with a video file last one had no problems encoding.
What happened is splitting process taking unnatural lengths of time then when it was eventually done, the result was a video which would skip backwards every few seconds + without sound at all.
As I mentioned this only occurs at this beta.

In the meantime, both versions had trouble handling a high quality video with DTS audio.
This mkv loads fine into Video Splitter BUT without the audio, audio waveform is a straight line = silence. Maybe there's a codec missing that would allow Video Splitter to properly handle DTS? Is there a workaround over it?

I am emailing you Mediainfo logs for both of these videos. Your initial interest suggests you are dedicated in improving the program so I'd be glad to help.

Alright, I have emailed you a problematic example link at support(at)solveigmm(dot)com since I saw you encourage other users to send samples there.
For your own reference I have included:

a. The original source mkv file (I've found one which is only 182 mb).
b. The output freezing fragment created by Video Splitter. (This one stucks after 2-3 seconds approximately)
c. The .ssp project file

I hope it helps and you are able to locate and fix the problem.
Thanks.

Thanks for your reply Olga.

Am I right that you open your output MKV files in Video Splitter?

No, the problem occurs when trying to play the output fragment both with VLC and Windows Media Player. I just tried playing the fragment in Video Splitter itself and it is playing fine there which obviously doesn't help much if you cannot play the output videos with two of the industry standard players while I don't seem to get this problem with other editors as I've said.

Could you please upload the sample of your MKV file to any file host service, e.g. to [url]dropbox.com[/url?

Yes. Do you mean the output fragment created with Video Splitter that gets stuck when played in the video players OR the original input video I've created the fragment output video from? Cause in the second case the file is close to 1 GB. Yet if that's what you want I could try make a NEW fragment from the fragment  I originally wanted to keep and had no problem cutting with some other editor.

Hello there

Doesn't SolveigMM Video Splitter properly work with mkv files? I am in search of a good all-purpose loseless editor (I currently try various products) and while I like Video Splitter's interface I can't get over the fact that with every mkv file I have tried I end up with a segment in which the video freezes during the first two seconds while the audio keeps playing normally. VLC doesn't have a problem playing output segments from the same video sources in question so there must be something wrong with the way Video Splitter handles mkvs or a setting or something. Is there a workaround for this? I use the latest version.
Thank you.
