Hi,
v. 7 gives me a minor problem that the previous versions never did:
just now, for example, I had it trim (no inside ads) a 104 minute file to the 87minute movie inside.
The conversion took very long - four to five times what's usual for such a task.
Afterwards the file size had shrunk to the expected value, but the length was now 127 minutes, with "nothing" added at the end.
When I open the file in VLC, it shows a lenght of 2:09 hours, and the movie is all there, but if I click onto any time after 87 minutes, VLC acts as if I had clicked on Stop.

Addendum:

I unearthed version 6 - and if I "feed" it the trimmed file, it shows it as having 87 minutes - no way to remove the end.
If, however, I ask it to trim the 104 minute original, it does so very quickly, and the result is perfect.

Hello, Olga,

where the uninstall/reinstall is concerned, I think I'll wait and see whether version 6 behaves in the same way on my computer.

With regards to my problem 1:

I just bought the upgrade to v.6 - Portable.

I installed the Beta from the link you provided and used it on some files which previously produced the error message quoted in my original posting.

Files 1 and 2 now cut be cut flawlessly, BUT when I tried file 3, the Beta turned out to be rather temperamental: just dragging the file into the "Start now" area of the program's window twice caused the program simply to close (no error messages, it just vanished completely), the third attempt then worked flawlessly.

---------------------------------------------------
Ooops, I've just bumped into a minor but annoying bug( or feature?): I tried to delete the third original, uncut file, as well as rename the cut version and couldn't: even though I had removed the file from the program's window, and the only place I could still find any mention of it was in the "Recent Files" list, which I cleared, both files were still "open in Video Splitter".
Eventually I quit the program - and only then I was asked if I wanted to "save the current project".

Addendum:
I've rerun the program and edited files 4, 5 and 6 - all worked perfectly - but I can't delete or rename any of the files involved.
In version 5 loading a new file "freed" the old one.
I suppose there is a way to close files without having to exit the whole program - but WHERE?
:-[  For those as blind as I am, I leave the above question in; the answer is "the sixth item in the File menu" - or "Ctrl-W".   :-[

I'm modifying this message a LOT - sorry; however, Ctrl-W may close something, but NOT the files on my hard disc; I still can't delete them.

Regards,
Jochen

Hello, Olga,

thanks for the prompt reply.

@1: So I'll use v.6 on some files that failed before, and will hopefullx have reason to buy it!   ;)

@2: The problem has been around for quite a while; I almost always download files in .avi format.
The app tells me that the test period had expired, and refuses to accept the registration key.
At least with the portable version the rest is quickly done: I've a directory with the installer and a text file with the key on the USB stick.
I simply remove the old Solveig directory, run the installer and copy/paste the registration key.

Kind Regards,
Jochen

Video Splitter / Updating to the current version?
« on: February 02, 2017, 08:57:23 PM »
Hi,

I've been toying with the idea of upgrading from version 5.2 (portable) to the current version (portable).

However, I am (nearly) completely satisfied with 5.2, so that an upgrade would only make sense, if at least Nr. 1 of the two only issues I have with 5.2 have been fixed.

1. In (very roughly) 10% of all cases it is either not possible to cut at all, or (more often) to remove the beginning of a file, because the program stops with an error message that says something like "The start time has been set after the end time".

2. Every now and then (very rough guess: after 20 to 30 cuts) the program insists that it isn't licensed, and a deinstal/reinstal is necessary.

Has either of these problems been fixed?

Regards, Jochen

Video Splitter / Home portable stopped working
« on: January 02, 2016, 03:50:46 AM »
Hi,

some time agp I updated to the lates version of Home Portable.

I  currently have hardly any time to edit any videos, but I'm sure I did at least one right after the update, so it worked then.

Now on vacation I did want to edit some videos - and can't: every video I try (even some that I have already cut with your app) produces the message (translated from German) "file is of unsupported file type or damaged."

What can I do?

Regards,
Jochen

EDIT: I just remembered that the installation file from December 14 is still in my Downloads directory, so I deleted the old Home Portable and reinstalled it; the result was the same - unsupported or damaged source file.

Hi,

with Windows 10 I have bumped into this same message repeatedly, in those circumstances:

1. Removing ads from .avi files that are usually 1GB+ in size.

2. Just now trying to splice together two .avi files sized 105 MB and 432 MB.

Kind Regards,

Jochen K.

edit:
I tried to join those two files twice; I just noticed that both attempts produced identical output: a film snippet 2:37 mins long and 20.7 MB in size.

edit 2:
I just loaded another largeish .avi file - and didn't even try to remove the ads, because I noticed something that I remember from all those failed attempts - the blue visualisation of the soundtrack proceeded until it had reached roughly three quarters, then it stopped.
The last time this happened, I...
-...removed everything without the blue sound bar; this worked.
-...tried just to keep that part and remove everything WITH the blue sound bar; this failed with the usual error message,

Hello, Olga,

sorry - after the first few days I forgot to check in again.

Just downloaded the beta version from the link, let it have a go at that movie - and it worked; thanks a lot!

Regards,

Jochen

Hello Jochen,

Please let us know if it also fixed at your end.

Thanks.

Hello, Olga,

just tried it on one file with the Index problem - that worked perfectly.

Thanks a lot!

Video Splitter / Strange error message - need help
« on: April 30, 2015, 10:33:56 PM »
Hi,

I am just trying to rid an American movie of its multitude of ad breaks.
As far as I can tell, I did everything as always - progressing through the movie from left to right / start to finish.

However, when I start the cutting, it progresses for three seconds, then I am presented with an error message, which goes something like this (translated from the German localisation): "The image starting time was set after its ending time", and there's an error code

HRESULT:0x80040228

What's to be done (except starting from scratch)?

Regards,

J.K.

Great, thanks a lot!

Hi,

very rarely I get an avi file that works perfectly when opened in VLC, but which "after Solveig" gives out an error message which reads somthing like "avi file's index is broken or missing....."

This happens to those files even if I only open them in the Splitter and tell it to split right away.

Is this a known problem, and if so, is there a solution?

Regards,

Jochen
