Here is more info on my problems...

At first I was focused on the particular clip that I was working on at the time... now I realize that I need to see if other clips are OK... Some work OK and some crash.

When I first posted this, I had installed and uninstalled v1.4 and v1.5 so many times that I lost track... I in/uninstalled other apps and codecs. My brain was wasted by then.
As best I can recall... This particular clip has this history...
I have a BIG avi file from a Torrent download.
GSpot id's it as a XviD 1.0.3 with 0x0055 MPEG1 L-3 VBR.
I have XviD v1.1.3 codec installed.

I took the original BIG avi and split it into about 5 pieces to make it easier to deal with. That worked OK with Trimmer 1.4.7 that I was originally using. I was still trying out different editors and installing apps and codecs. I came back to Trimmer a few days later and tried to Trim the Trimmed files some more.
Some of these pieces would re-Trim, others would not.
These are pieces made by the same App at about the same time from the same Big AVI.
I am not sure if these are Single Chunk pieces or if some are made of several chunks via the multi-clip feature... that might be the difference that make a difference. I have already deleted the original BIG AVI so I cannot retest this theory.

The Trimmer runs for a few seconds and the Progress Bar gets HALF WAY across and then disappears as if it were complete. The resulting file is a SILENT MOVIE and when I go to close the Trimmer, I got an error box about "AVITrimmerApp MFC Application... AVITrimmerApp MFC Application has encountered a problem an needs to close" with the "Send Report to Microsoft" button.

I can tell when it is going to fail... it takes several seconds before the Progress Bar shows progress. After a Silent movie, the app will no longer work until you Close it (resulting in the error message).
When all is going to be OK, the Progress bar start immediately and yu get sound and vdo as expected.

In the past I recall getting another error about "Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library... Runtime error... This app has requested the runtime to terminate it in an unusual way." with an OK button.

I also recall that I was actually crashing DURING the processing at some point... getting the "Visual C++" error and NO resulting file (maybe a 0 byte file)... now I get the Silent and an MFC error when I close afterwards.
Like I said earlier... I have been round and round and cannot remember all the exact details.

Since it resulted in a Silent movie, I tried MANY codecs (as noted earlier) but still get Silent and that error.

Since I posted, I got the latest VirtualDub 1.7 (for mp3 vbr) and it does OK with the file... but VD does only one clip at a time... I really liked the multi clip feature of this Trimmer.

This problem is complicated and impossible for someone else to try to duplicate.
I need to find a nice SMALL avi that does the same thing.

Hopelessly yours
Mike H

Hello mfh721!

Could you please tell me, when does this crash occurs? When you starting the application, when loading media or when you trying to start the trimming process?
Also, does this error occurs with a specific file or with every file you want to trim?

I installed the free Trimmer v1.5 and get an error box...

AVITrimmerApp MFC Application
AVITrimmerApp MFC Application has encountered a problem and needs to close...

When I tried to trim out several sections of an AVI with Trimmer I got this message.

I uninstalled the free trimmer and tried the Splitter demo v1.2 but I get the same error box.

Windows XP home sp2, WMP v9.

The Trimmer worked on this box for about a week, then started crashing.
I thought it might be because I had installed some apps and codecs.
I zapped the HD and put an older HD image from long before I installed Trimmer... still crashed... so it was NOT due to other apps or codecs.

This app was EXACTLY what I needed... I hope that there is a fix for me.

(edit) The AVI video is identified as XviD with MPEG1 L-3 audio.
It plays in all players OK.
